Coach Mark Mangino expects to return as coach of the Jayhawks in 2010, despite the trouble surrounding the program this year.
“A friend of mine told me something one time I think is a very good way to go about life,” Mangino said after Missouri’s 41-39 rally Saturday night. “I’d rather die on my feet than live on my knees.”
Two weeks ago, the Kansas athletic department opened a probe investigating Mangino’s treatment of his players, after anonymous reports accused him of becoming inappropriate with players and even poking one in the chest.
“When I was hired at Kansas they told me they desperately needed structure and discipline in the football program,” he said. “The people that hired me said it was the key point. And I’ve done that the right way and I feel good about it and I’m proud of the way I’ve dealt with the players in our program.”
A 12-1 record and a win in the Orange Bowl in 2007 earned Mangino a contract extension through 2012, meaning that Kansas would be on the hook for $6.6 million if they released Mangino early.

Football coach Mark Mangino appeared on Sports Radio 610 in Kansas City on Thursday, where he defended his program from recent allegations levied by former players.
“We are sending kids out into the world prepared,” Mangino told the radio station. “But I can’t do the work of some parents, what they should have done before [the players] got to me. Some of these guys are bitter, they are bitter and [the allegations] are about that.
“There are some things that happen for 18 years of their lives that I can’t change in four years of college. Can’t do it. Can’t change their behaviors, can’t change their attitudes.”
Players accused Mangino of crossing the line with them during their time on the team, after news broke that Kansas is conducting an internal investigation over allegations that Mangino poked one player in the chest in a walkthrough or practice before the Colorado game on Oct. 17 this season.
“There are people who want to embarrass the program for their 15 minutes of fame,” Mangino said.

The Kansas Jayhawks athletic department is investigating rumors circulating about head coach Mark Mangino.
What started out as a once surprisingly promising season has gone downhill in a hurry, and now things have gotten even worse.
The head coach has been accused of physically and verbally abusing his players, but all may not be lost.
Mangino said he has not lost the players, which is backup by the support he has received from quarterback Todd Reesing.
It will be interesting to see how this situation plays out in the coming weeks and what details may emerge.

Today, Kansas announced that they would open an investigation of football coach Mark Mangino, whose conduct around players has allegedly caused a rift on the team.
A source told ESPN’s Joe Schad that one alleged incident featured Mangino yelling at and striking a player earlier this season. Another source reports that some players have threatened to transfer, due to perceived disrespect from Mangino when he speaks to them.
“I can confirm an internal review is under way,” Kansas athletic director Lew Perkins said. “It involves a personnel matter, and as a result, is confidential. It would be inappropriate for me to provide further information right now.”
The situation has resulted in several players and players’ parents speaking with the AD. Perkins spoke with the entire football team on Monday night, with Mangino not present.
“I haven’t lost the team, not one bit. I may have lost some people around here but it’s not players,” Mangino said at his weekly news conference.
Mangino brought the Jayhawks back from the dead after taking over in 2002. He led them to the greatest season in school football history in 2007, when the Jayhawks fought their way to a 12-1 record and an Orange Bowl victory over Virginia Tech.
This year, the Jayhawks got off to a hot start, winning their first five games and being ranked as No. 16… but senior QB Todd Reesing has dropped off and sent the team into a tailspin.
“You lose a few games in a row, those type of things surface. It’s not uncommon,” Mangino said. “I don’t take it lightly, but I’m focused on Texas and I’m very comfortable the way we manage and run the football program here. This is what comes when things aren’t going well. You’re going to find disgruntled people.”

The Kansas Jayhawks turned in another disappointing performance in a 17-10 loss to the Kansas State Wildcats.
In what is usually one of the most intense rivalries in the Big 12, the Wildcats protected their home field.
The usually potent Jayhawks offense had little to show for itself against a very average Wildcats defense.
Kansas trailed the Wildcats 10-7 at halftime and just couldn’t ever get going offensively in the second half.
It’s a disappointing effort from a Kansas team that started off the season so hot but has now lost two straight.

The Kansas Jayhawks continue to struggle down the stretch after a 42-21 loss to the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
Kansas held a lead in the second quarter before Texas Tech knotted the game at 14 going into halftime.
In the second half, it was all Texas Tech, especially the fourth quarter, which saw the Red Raiders score 28 unanswered points.
There is no shame in losing to a quality team like Texas Tech, but it is disappointing after such a surprisingly strong start to the season.
Kansas can still regroup and play their way into the Big 12 North division title, which would mean a date in the Big 12 championship game.

The AP reported on Tuesday that Kansas quarterback Todd Reesing will retain the starting job, a week after being benched in the closing minutes of a 42-21 loss at Texas Tech.
Reesing has been struggling with a groin injury, which has coincided with the Jayhawks’ demise. Everything from his accuracy to his ability to scramble has suffered, to the point where head coach Mark Mangino replaced him with redshirt freshman Kale Pick.
Reesing might go down as the greatest quarterback in the history of the program. The heights to which he’s taken a floundering program, culminating in an Orange Bowl win against Virginia Tech two years ago, are unrivaled. Injured or not, he gives the Jayhawks the best chance to succeed on Saturdays, and at this point in his career, Mangino shouldn’t be sending messages to his signal caller. Reesing deserves better than that as the door closes on his illustrious career.
