Gill to coach Kansas

Buffalo Bison head coach Turner Gill has agreed to take the head coaching position with the Kansas Jayhawks.

Gill has been one of the hottest coaching candidates for major Division-I jobs for a couple of seasons now but has yet to find a job to his liking until now. Kansas has some talent to work with and plays in the weaker division in the Big 12.

He will take over for Mark Mangino, who was forced to resign after reports began to surface that he was physically and verbally abusing his players.

Mangino had a lot of success at Kansas, taking a terrible program that was overshadowed by the basketball team and turning them around into a true BCS contender.

He got the shaft at Kansas for sure with his dismissal, as I’m sure whatever he did goes on at every college program in the country. He was just unfortunate enough to rub a couple of people the wrong way and they happened to want to make a name for themselves.

Texas routs Kansas, 51-20

The Texas Longhorns rolled past the Kansas Jayhawks in a laugher, 51-20.

Texas took a 27-6 lead into halftime before scoring 17 fourth-quarter points and turning the game into a rout.

Texas quarterback Colt McCoy continues to make his bid for a Heisman Trophy, and another trip to New York City for the awards ceremony is a near certainty.

The Longhorns just need take care of Texas A&M next week and then win the Big 12 championship game to play for the national title.

The Longhorns would very likely play the winner of the SEC championship game between Florida and Alabama.

Coach Mangino Steps Down

Two years after leading Kansas to its greatest year in its football program’s history, Jayhawks coach Mark Mangino announced Friday that he would be stepping down at the end of the season.

“We appreciate the eight years that Mark has given to rebuilding our football program,” Perkins said in a statement on Kansas’ Web site. “He and I have reached a mutually satisfactory agreement that reflects the appreciation we have for his efforts on behalf of Kansas football.”

Mangino led the Jayhawks to a 12-1 record and a victory in the Orange Bowl in 2007; he signed an extension to his contract after the season that carried on until 2012, and would result in him receiving $6.6 million if fired without reason.

“It’s been tough on a lot of people, but probably the most important thing is the kids,” Perkins said. “It’s been pretty tough on them. The kids are the ones I’m concerned [with].”

Mangino was involved in a great deal of controversy this season, after reports leaked of his corrosive attitude with players. A number of players spoke out to local media, suggesting that Mangino had crossed a line with his conduct towards them.

“Some players will be happy to see him go and others will be sad to see him go,” defensive back Justin Thornton said. “He did a lot of good for a lot of people here.”
