Northern Iowa stuns Kansas, 69-67

Northern Iowa pulled the biggest upset in years with a 69-67 win over the top seed Kansas Jayhawks.

They led much of the way as Kansas looked like a team that was rattled and panicking against an inferior opponent.

The Jayhawks weren’t excuting offensively and were not playing their trademark aggressive defense.

Sherron Collins had a terrible night from the floor and Cole Aldrige was a non-factor much of the night.

It’s a terribly disappointing loss for what seemed to be by far and way the best team in the country.

Kansas’ title dreams jolted in upset loss

By Bud L. Ellis

Picked by so many to win this NCAA Tournament, Kansas instead found its world – and the brackets of millions – rocked by Northern Iowa on Saturday.

Ali Farokhmanesh’s 3-pointer was the dagger that felled the overall No. 1 seed in the NCAAs, Kansas’ season coming to a surprising and jolting end with a 69-67 loss to Northern Iowa in the second round at Oklahoma City.

It’s the first time a No. 1 seed hasn’t made it to the Sweet 16 since 2004. The Jayhawks trailed most of the way, falling behind 10-2 at the start, and couldn’t come all the way back from a 12-point deficit with 12 ½ minutes left.

Farokhmanesh’s 3-pointer made it 66-62 Northern Iowa. Kansas (33-3) then was called for an offensive foul on the next possession, basically putting things away and knocking a giant out of the tournament.

Marcus Morris led the Jayhawks with 16 points. Cole Aldridge finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Sherron Collins and Markleff Morris each added 10 points.

Kansas rolls past Kansas State, 82-65

The No. 2 Kansas Jayhawks pulled away in the second half for an 82-65 victory over the No. 5 Kansas State Wildcats.

With the Big 12 title on the line, the two rivals went at it in a closely contested game for the first 30 minutes.

In the end, it was Sherron Collins who celebrated Senior Day at Allen Fieldhouse with a victory and conference title.

Meanwhile, it was freshman Xavier Henry who led the Jayhawks to their biggest win of the season.

Henry, who is suddenly blossoming, finished with 19 points, five rebounds, two steals, one assist and a blocked shot.

Kansas upset by Oklahoma State, 85-77

The No. 1 Kansas Jayhawks had an off day by their standards, and it cost them in an 85-77 loss to the host Oklahoma State Cowboys.

Point guard Sherron Collins snapped out of his recent slump to score 22 points, but most of them came when it didn’t really matter.

The Jayhawks struggled on both ends of the floor, and they fell behind by almost 20 points at different points in the game.

They were able to rally back to cut it to single-digits late in the second half, but too many mistakes cost them a chance to rally back for a win.

When you fall behind by a lot of points against a decent team, especially on the road, the margin for error in trying to come back from such a deficit is so small.
